Throughout the crafting journey, at Salish Sea Violin, we select the finest woods for tonal quality and beauty. Head luthier, Monica Athulya Gehrig, has been building instruments since her teens, completing her higher education at a distinguished Swiss violin making school. Her process has evolved over time, but has always been deeply connected to the natural world. Monica's love of nature and unique perspective inspires her to imbue every instrument with the elemental properties of the location of its making.
Prior to precision carving, the instruments are bathed in local water sources, the Salish and Mediterranean Seas, for example, and air dried in the wind. Each instrument has a signature spiral shell embedded at the base of the neck and an engraved moniker featuring the artist's name.
For Monica, building instruments goes beyond the act of artful carving-- it enters a realm of mysticism which is directly reflected in the outcome and quality of every created instrument. Visit the Master Violins page for examples of finished works.
